Strengthening Transport’s Leadership Pipeline

The latest KPMG / REC Report on Jobs suggests the UK hiring slowdown may be starting to ease, which is really encouraging news, but in transport the picture still feels a little more nuanced.

The sector is going through a period of significant change, and at the same time we are seeing many experienced leaders retiring or taking opportunities overseas. This is creating a real capability challenge for the sector.

In many organisations, the talent profile now looks quite polarised. Many people in transport have 30 years plus experience alongside those in the first few years of their career, with fewer leaders in the middle of that pipeline.

One answer may lie in bringing talented leaders into the sector from adjacent industries and pairing them with experienced transport professionals. Done well, that approach allows organisations to retain and share valuable industry knowledge while also introducing fresh perspectives. And in doing so, we can build more capability and capacity into the sector.
